Salt Secrets – Salt and our kids

Let’s safeguard Our Kids health by being aware of a Sneaky Culprit in Our Kitchen.

Look, my kids love salty foods.. it creates flavour sensations in the mouth that is hard to match!! Whilst salt is essential for our body to function, it’s important that we understand how much we actually need so that we don’t have too much of it because it can certainly be harmful if overdone long term.

So let’s uncover the truth about this sneaky culprit in our kitchens.

The Sneaky Sources of Salt

Picture this: your kids’ favourite meal – pasta with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and, of course, that irresistible sprinkle of salt. It seems harmless, right? After all, everyone loves a bit of salt; it makes food taste better. But that’s where the problem begins.

Salt, that four-letter word, has a way of creeping into our children’s diets, often unnoticed. In my latest podcast episode, I reveal some surprising sources of salt that kids eat in their daily meals. You’ll be astonished to learn that it’s not just the potato chips and fast food we associate with high salt content. In fact, 60% of the sodium in their diet comes from everyday foods like bread, cereals, and cheese.

The Hidden Health Risks

But why should you be concerned about your child’s salt intake? It’s because high salt consumption at a young age can have long-term health consequences. Research has shown that children who develop a preference for salty foods tend to carry this habit into adulthood. This sets them on an unhealthy path, increasing their risk of health-related problems like high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke.

The Need for a Mindful Approach

So, what can we do to protect our children’s health? It starts with being mindful of the salt content in their meals. While salt is an essential nutrient for our bodies in small amounts, excessive consumption can lead to health issues.

In episode 4 of the Easy Feed, I discuss practical tips to reduce your family’s salt intake without sacrificing taste. From label reading to creative use of herbs and spices, these simple changes can make a world of difference in safeguarding your family’s health.
